The Postgraduate Medical Education Council of Tasmania (PMCT) is the organisation responsible for undertaking accreditation of the prevocational medical terms in public hospitals and some general practices in Tasmania.
Accreditation ensures that prevocational medical doctors receive high quality education, training, supervision, assessment and support. Prevocational doctors are those who have not yet commenced vocational training with a college (usually doctors in their first two to three years post qualification).
The Royal Hobart Hospital offers a wide range of terms accredited for both Interns (PGY1) and PGY2+/IMGs at PGY2+ level. These range from the core terms including Emergency Medicine, Surgery and Medicine, to a wide selection of sub-specialty training terms.
There are four terms completed by junior doctors each calendar year. Each term commences on a Monday, and finishes on a Sunday.
For 2023 the term dates are:
9 January – 16 April
17 April – 16 July
17 July – 15 October
16 October – 14 January 2024
The Medical Board of Australia requires all Interns to complete a series of terms in a range of specialties to ensure you have a broad-based introduction to working as a doctor. Each term will include orientation, supervised practice, education, and assessment.
The minimum requirement is to complete terms of at least 10 weeks each in medicine and surgery, and at least 8 weeks in emergency medical care. You will also usually complete other terms in a range of specialties, and in different health care settings. Examples include aged care, general practice, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine.
PGY2+/IMGs at PGY2+ doctors are also required to complete four terms each year. Term allocations are organised by THS, and are assigned according to the requirements of individuals. For example those seeking general registration will need to complete different terms to those who are on the Rural Generalist pathway.
Term allocations are published prior to the commencement of the first term of the calendar year, and are updated as needed by the Clinical Management Unit.
